Three times Oscar Academy Award™ winning editor Walter Murch knows a thing or two about what it takes to truly craft a piece of film. His resume reads like the Empire Magazine Top Ten films of all time, with box office hits including The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and Cold Mountain to his credit.

Unleashing creativity requires not only a creative vision but the right tools to realise it. Having successfully launched Green Rock VCS (Virtual Creative Solutions) last month, we were thrilled to put Walter in the driving seat of the very latest technology that he described as “the future of post-production”.

No one is better placed to put Green Rock VCS through its paces than Walter himself on his latest film Coup 53, which he chose to edit in Adobe Premiere. He has been working with their developers to innovate upgrades over the 5 years and stay at the forefront of new developments within the industry. Upbeat about the prospect of working remotely for the first time, we set Walter up on the platform and asked him to put it through its paces.

From an operational point of view, it is crucial that collaboration can take place as it would in real life, to ensure a seamless workflow. Green Rock VCS with its live view and review portal enabled that real-time feedback and that “in-room feel”, which is so important for a very involved online edit such as Walter Murch. Being able to provide instant feedback, annotation and edit notes through the VCS platform, maximised the online edit time. This enabled an updated version of the film to be produced, (in this instance a version for French cinemas) in time for its screening later the same week. The reliability and stability of the Green Rock VCS platform were crucial to this seamless workflow as any delays would have impacted delivery. Reliability is key with any virtual cloud based workflow and the VCS platform has undergone rigorous testing to ensure the technical infrastructure it is built on, is in incredibly stable at every juncture.

Moving into a virtualised edit workflow from traditional in-suite access was a new experience for me. I’ve always embraced new ways of working and the VCS platform was a game-changer. Having the live screen review portals and instant review links within the platform really made this a collaborative process accessible from anywhere in the world. It’s certainly the future of Post Production and Green Rock are doing it now.

In a time when sustainability and the future of work are front of mind for so many creative industries, having a solution that is tried and tested and can offer a genuine solution to remote collaboration, is key to the future of the industry.

Having the endorsement from such an industry veteran so soon after bringing Green Rock VCS to market feels great. All the hard work and innovation we have invested in the two years, in designing a sustainable post-production workflow fit for the next century is beginning to pay off. This is just the beginning as we disrupt the industry and retool for remote and hybrid working practises – it’s positively encouraging
